How To Pick The Right Company

Before you set out to find and select the right company for you, make sure you review How to Pick the Right Career Path. Once you have settled on a career path, you just need to do more thinking about yourself and the companies in the industry. To give your company selection process an effective framework, here is a guide to help you pick the right company.
Picking the right company for you is all about understanding yourself and then researching and understanding the companies in your field. Once you understand both of those items you can begin to target companies to approach.

Research Yourself: Self-Assessment

Just like with picking a career, you need to understand yourself. This time however you need to be more specific, but it should be easy after the self-assessment you went through in picking your career. Again, ask yourself:

  • What are my interests?
  • What are my skills?
  • What are my needs?
  • What are my values?
  • What are my personal attributes?

Research Companies

Basic Company Research

With a more detailed understanding of yourself, start looking at the companies which can accommodate the career you have chosen. You must do your research:

  • Look at company profiles.
  • Look at trade journals.
  • Review companies’ websites.
  • Read any relevant business articles about companies.
  • Go to job fairs and find out about the companies in your field.
  • Go to your university career center and read as much as you can about different companies.
  • Ask people you know and respect about companies they know.
  • Ask your professors and your placement officers about different companies.
  • Speak with current employees of the company. What do they like? What don’t they like?
  • Network as much as possible and share your career goals and what you are thinking to people you meet in order to get their advice.

Interviewing is a Two-Way Process

When you visit a company for interviews, remember that interviewing is a two-way process. You are there not only to sell the company on hiring you, but equally important, to gather information about the company to decide if it is the right choice for you.

Remember to use both your eyes and your ears when learning about the company. You should not only ask good questions of everyone you meet with, but also observe the environment and the body language of the people who work there.

Some questions to ask in interviews:

  • What is it like to work here?
  • What do you like about working here?
  • What do you dislike about working here?
  • Why did you choose this job?
  • How would you describe this company’s culture?

When interviewing and in public spaces, try to observe the work environment to assess if it is a good fit for you:

  • Do people look happy?
  • Do you see people smiling and laughing?
  • Is there an energy in the company? Does it seem vibrant?
  • Is it social?
